'Masterpiece: Pilot episode [short edit]'
Role: Contestant
I am the Web Editor at The Location Guide (TLG), a digital resource for international film producers. My latest web articles are available online.
As TLG's in-house writer and producer, I work across the company's brands. I am Locations Editor for makers, TLG's bi-annual magazine for global film and media production. I act as a copywriter/scriptwriter for makers and shakers Awards, a prize ceremony owned by TLG that celebrates the achievements of the film production community. I also produce written and audiovisual content for the group's business conference FOCUS - The Meeting Place for International Production.
I was awarded a three-year SOAS PhD research scholarship in September 2018. I submitted my doctoral thesis on 15 September 2021, and successfully defended the paper on 13 December 2021 with no revisions.
My research project 'Kahlil Joseph, New Media and the Audiovisual Atlantic: Music and Moving Images between Africa, America and Europe' examines the films, music videos, advertisements and installations of interdisciplinary filmmaker Kahlil Joseph. The thesis explores the ways in which the director and his contemporaries merge visual representations of intercontinental experiences with the countercultural energies of Afrodiasporic music, thereby offering alternative versions of contemporaneity that challenge the Eurocentricity underpinning Western modernity. My MA dissertation - 'Kahlil Joseph, New Media and the African Diaspora' - won the SOAS School of Arts Postgraduate Dissertation Prize 2018.
I assist the online curation of the five-year project Screen Worlds: Decolonising Film and Screen Studies, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC). I am a guest editor for the forthcoming Screenworks special issue - Musicology on Screen. Four academic publications (two book chapters, two peer-reviewed journal articles) based on my research are scheduled for 2022, and I am passionate about turning my final PhD project into a book. Kahlil Joseph has collaborated with musicians Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, FKA Twigs, Flying Lotus, Sampha, Shabazz Palaces and Shafiq Husayn as well as fashion labels KENZO and Vans.
